If a king were an angel we should not chuse to trust himras some nations trust, the people having managed so ill, that they cannot avoid it. And if we do not cherish the advantages D which we enjoy, under limited monarchy;it is easy to conceive what may one day happen to us!--So if the privileges of the representatives of the people are not properly attended to, they may be stretched into the tyranny of Republicanism. What kind of government that that is, we also know by the example of some States, which are not nearly so free as ours, nor so well suited to our his: h semirr.ents of national selicity! The powers of our representatives are almost necessarily so extensive, as to be reputed undefinable, and hang over our heads, as it were, a sword: but it is supposed to be held by such wisdom and discretion, such probity and honour, such religious veneration for the liberty of the people, and the individuality of their stern virtue, as legislators, that no harm can arise to the people. If at any time it should not be so, the people must guard against democratical power, not chusing to live, or rather breathe, under demagogues, or a host of tyrannical republicans: but so long as the people are virtuous, and unbiassed in their choice, they have nothing to sear: their greatest danger is from themselves. If legislators should ever become as corrupt in that capacity, as we os;en find men are in the executive parts of government, then we may prepare our legs for chains, and our necks for bolts of iron; consequently, the people people cannot be too much guarded in their choice: they should be men, whose interest, as..
